Sacrifice

An alien realm ruined by demons yet liberated by the first Demon Hunter assumed the role of Lord of the Realm to gather an army of Demonic Orcs, Nagas, Elves, and Demon Hunters in preparation for another impending invasion of the demons. Every time the demonic beings attacked the Elven Kingdoms, they had to deal with a vast array of creatures with poor equipment and a lack of readiness. To fix this, the first Demon Hunter recruited those qualified to run experiments at the Black Temple to create more of his kind. Yet, not anyone can survive the ordeal of extensive training, ruthless mental and physical conditioning, and mysterious rituals to become a Demon Hunter.

Future experiments led by a handful of individuals who wished to continue soon discovered the correct process for a person to become a Demon Hunter. By having a person inscribing the name of the demon they would hunt before slaying them, eating its heart, and drinking its blood. The soul of the devoured demon becomes bonded to them, but from this fusion, the Demon Hunter experiences visions of countless worlds across the universe invaded by the demons. In horror at the overwhelming sight, they would gouge out their eyes which usually puts them into a coma.

Demonic powers would then infuse into their bodies after assimilating the demon's heart and blood, resulting in various demonic mutations such as scales, horns, or claws. The first ability that these Demon Hunters would awaken to would be a magical view of the world called Spectral Sight that they can utilize on command, giving them to shift from the perception of the world as they once did to the ebb and flow of energies with auras emitting from living creatures. Like magic, the person can feel the flow of power as they gain a clearer understanding of the souls of the living and the dead.

This success marked the first generation of Demon Hunters, establishing an elite group that specialized in hunting and killing demonic creatures. A few among this batch would later become notable figures within the Demon Hunter history as they were named Caria, Varedis, and Kayn. Each of them had Arcanic tattoos marked on their bodies to keep their inner demons from overwhelming their state of mind as it eased their demon's presence with their whispers of doubt, hatred, rage, lust, and fear.

Despite the Arcane countering demonic energies, it would require individual willpower not to become a demon themselves. Unfortunately, some Demon Hunters showed destructive tendencies that made it difficult for them to recognize friends and foes. As they had a constant craving for demonic powers and flesh, living in a state of torment, where some would succumb to the overbearing nature of the demonic energies as they would lose control of themselves. Over time, infighting occurred, resulting in several deaths and division between them.

Those that survived would develop a sense of disillusionment, grandiosity, and despair fueled by their inner demons. The process that allowed an Elf to become a Demon Hunter enticed the protagonist to join the quest to annihilate the demons and their master.
